Use Foods Around the House to Heal Indigestion, Acne and Sore Throat!

While the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” isn’t usually taken literally—it should be. Apples, like a lot of other common foods you’ll find in your fridge, are packed with healing nutrients that can save you a trip to the doctor the next time you’re not feeling so well. While us westerners often think of food as nourishing our bodies, we hardly ever look to it for medicinal purposes. However, for centuries different cultures such as the Chinese and American Indians have used food to help them feel better.  And we are not just talking about eating food, but also utilizing it in tonics and salves—and even placing it on the body to help draw out toxins.

Despite the disconnect often experienced when thinking of the notion that food can heal, nearly every person can think of a food related remedy that has been passed down in her or his family. The interesting thing is that a lot of these “old wives tales,” as they are often called, actually work and have been backed up by science. Furthermore, with health care costs on the rise, now is the perfect time to explore how to utilize common foods to promote better health. So open your mind—and your fridge— and let’s get started looking at the healing powers of food.

Tomatoes – There are oodles of studies that show that the chemical that makes tomatoes red, known as lycopene, may lower the risk of cancer. Tomatoes are also rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium and Potassium and can be used topically to draw out toxins. Next time you have a breakout try rubbing fresh tomato juice on your skin during your cleansing process.  Also, when you have a sore throat, try cutting a tomato in half and putting each side, juicy side down, on your neck where it hurts. This really works! You can also enjoy the healing benefits of tomatoes by making delicious sauces. Some of our favorite natural tomato products are made by Muir Glen.

Onions – Ahhh, the onion. Did you know that onions contain as many as 150 phytochemicals including quercetin which works to help to dispel free radicals in the body? Probably not, which is why you are reading this article in the first place, right? Anyway, the next time that you find yourself really stuffed up or feeling like you might have a touch of the flu, try making a huge pot of simple onion stew. First, find the biggest and deepest pot that you have and fill it with water until it’s about half full. Then cut 3 whole onions, put them in the pot and bring it to a boil. Simmer for about 15 minutes or until the onions are tender. After you’ve removed it from the heat, check the temperature of the steam with your hand (don’t burn yourself!) When it’s not too hot, poor the onion broth into a cup and sip it slowly while continuing to inhale the wonderful, healing vapors. This simple remedy can help clear you up and get you back on track.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Without going into a long narrative about how Apple Cider Vinegar works to help the body, we’ll save you a lot of boring reading by stating simply that it has been suggested that it works because it helps balance alkaline levels in the body. (Western diets are often more acid than alkaline…thus more alkaline can be ideal).  If you find yourself eating out a few times a week, try making Apple Cider Vinegar your new best friend. After eating heavy restaurant food—or just something that didn’t quite agree with you—put a tablespoon of Unfiltered Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (like Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar) in a large glass of water and sip it very, very slowly. Don’t be surprised if by the time you are finished your tummy ache is completely gone. Apple Cider Vinegar is also a wonderful natural acne treatment.

Which Common Herb is Better Than Botox?

Looking for a way to shed years off your appearance without resorting to chemicals or even more drastic measures? If so, make sure to check out this age-defying herb that is touted for its natural ability to help heal and nourish the body.

Nettle, a member of the Urticaceae family, is a nutrition-packed herb that has been used throughout time to help promote better health. In fact, some two thousand years ago Caesar’s Roman troops were ordered to gather as much nettle as possible from England because of its many benefits.

Nettle is rich in chlorophyll, and is a good source vitamins A, C and E, iron, calcium and phosphates – key nutrients to help turn back time. It has been used to help prevent infections, combat viruses and bacteria and revitalize the body after childbirth.

When it comes to helping one improve their appearance, nettle serves as a magic tonic for hair and skin. It helps heal blemishes, just like these other innovative natural acne treatments.  Specifically, it helps increase circulation to make brittle hair feel more luxurious and strong. And guys – listen up – it has also been touted for helping to prevent hair loss. On the smooth skin front, it helps to soothe irritation and relieve acne and eczema to promote a more youthful appearance.

The easiest and perhaps best way to consume nettle is by making a simple tea. You can find high quality organic loose leaf nettle at sites including Mountain Rose Herbs. Try combining a bit of organic loose leaf peppermint with nettle to produce a delicious tea blend.

If you are new to nettle or herbs in general, consult your health care provider before adding nettle into your daily routine. If your current health care provider doesn’t know anything about nettle or its vast benefits (or treats you like an idiot for asking about it), then ask around or do your own research into the healing benefits of herbs.

Protect your right to freely purchase health supplements! Act now!

Perhaps one of the greatest concerns of those who utilize herbs and supplements to support their overall health is that new regulations will be put in place to restrict our access to these powerful tools. Since the US Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) passed in 1994, which gave us the right to purchase supplements, many have wondered if this would truly be the end of the battle.

Part of the concern comes from the fact that other countries do not have the same rights to supplements as people living in the US. For instance, “The Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements,”as developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), has challenged people’s rights to supplements throughout the world.

Adding to the concern, a few years ago there was a bit of an uproar over the FDA “reclassification” of vitamins, supplements and herbs. This turned out to be a false alarm because it was determined that the new reclassification did not specifically propose any new federal laws beyond those already in place. However, that doesn’t mean that our health freedoms will always be protected. Make sure that you stay informed! Conquer Flu Fear

It’s that time again when people start worrying about getting sick. In a past post, we mentioned how Bach Flower Remedies can be used if someone is experiencing a great deal of fear over the negative media coverage surrounding the flu. Then, a reader (Thanks Nancy!) gave us a tip on an article that the Bach Flower Education Center has posted on their Web site about this very same topic!

As Dr. Margaret  Chan, General Director of the World Health Organization, raises the global pandemic level to 5, the second highest level of threat possible, another disease is quickly ravaging people around the globe – fear. Reports from Mexico state that many have abandoned their homes and jobs for the countryside, while others have been housebound for days, both groups left with little to do but watch the news and worry about their own health and that of their loved ones. Meanwhile, in the US, sales of hand sanitizer are soaring nationwide and, in far north Ann Arbor MI, the local pharmacy is running out of surgical masks.  It is certainly essential to take practical health precautions such as washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough/sneeze and avoiding those who are ill, yet being fearful and worried about the flu is not in the best interest of your heath and wellness. In fact, research shows that to stay well, it is best to remain calm and positive. Read full article.

Are Retroviruses a Main Cause of Breast Cancer?

While many think that genetics are the main cause of breast cancer, only about 1 in 10 cases are caused by a genetic link. So if genetics aren’t the prevalent cause of breast cancer, what is?

Since the 1930s, there has been a stream of studies surrounding retroviruses and their link to human cancers.  Simply put, retroviruses invade the host DNA and disrupt genes that control cell division, which in turn can cause cancer. When it comes to breast cancer there has been some promising research that shows a connection. In fact, throughout the years well-known researchers have explored the possible link between breast cancer and a retrovirus known as the mammary tumor virus (MMTV). In two prominent studies, researchers found the MMTV retrovirus present in breast tumors and cells.

So what can you do to protect yourself from retroviruses?  Olive leaf extract has been found to be a wonderful healing remedy for retroviruses due to its antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasiti and antioxidant properties. Also, the X-40 Kit was specifically designed by the legendary healer, Hanna Kroeger, to combat retroviruses. It also helps prevent fatigue and lift brain fog and is a great tool to promote overall wellness.

Easy Summer Cleansing Tips

OK, this time you swore that you weren’t going to do it, but between the weekend parties and restaurant outings you ate, ate and ate some more. No worries! Even if you’re feeling as heavy as a bowling ball, here are some easy cleansing recipes and tips to make you feel light on your feet again.

Simple as Soup

Incorporating soup into your diet after overeating may be just what your body needs. Try making a huge pot of this light, but nourishing vegetable soup and eating it throughout the week.

Super Veggie and Tofu Soup
Serves 8

1 package tofu, firm, cubed
1 Tbsp. hot sauce (Use your favorite)
2 Tbsp. canola oil
2 Tbsp. parsley
1 bay leaf
1 pinch thyme
1 can vegetable stock
3 Tbsp. flour
1 package pearl onions, peeled
1 bunch organic carrots, peeled, chopped
1 tomato, peeled, chopped
4 medium size red potatoes, peeled and chopped
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup green beans
1 cup yellow squash, sliced
1 cup zucchini, sliced
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh parsley and parmesan cheese for garnish

Brown tofu in oil and hot sauce over medium heat in large deep pan. Remove from pan and set aside. Add 9 cups of water, spices and vegetable stock and then bring to a boil. Reduce heat to med-low and cook with lid slightly cracked for 1 hour. Mix flour and 1 cup water by shaking in a closed container and add to the stew. Stir in flour mixture well and then add vegetables and cook covered on med-low for about an hour, or until vegetables are tender, but not mushy. In the last 15 minutes add the tofu back in. Stir in more water if the stew gets too thick for your liking. Add fresh cracked pepper and salt to taste. Garnish with fresh parsley and parmesan cheese.

Make my Clay
Who would have thought that clay can be good for you? Sold in natural health stores, liquid clay or Bentonite, as it’s more commonly known, features an absorbent action that allows it to bind to non-nutritive substances such as herbicides and other potentially harmful waste so that yucky stuff can be expelled from the body. Not for everyone, especially those with intestinal issues, make sure to consult your health care practitioner before using it to cleanse your system. Our favorite brand is Sonne’s No. 7. Use in conjunction with Psyllium Seed to intensify the cleansing effect.

Use Positive Thinking to Heal

When it comes to illness, sometimes people equate positive thinking to “praying to be healed,” but using positive thinking to feel better doesn’t have to be a religious experience. We were inspired to write this post after reading a comment from a reader who claimed that prayer and positive thinking does not contribute to healing. However, it has been scientifically proven otherwise. Let us explain.

First we need to make a distinction between “prayer” and “religion.”  Religion is something people believe, prayer is something that people do. And no matter what your religion (or even if you don’t have one) all prayer consists of the same underlying components. When someone prays, they are reaching within themselves and focusing positive intentions to come their way. Sometimes this means praying to a religious figure, sometimes this means praying for strength from within. But no matter how one prays or how their prayer is directed, the focus remains on a positive outcome.

Thus at the heart of every prayer is a positive thought, or a request for something good to happen. And when you focus positive thoughts toward healing—whether in a prayer, mantra, meditation or any other positive thought form— it can make a big difference. In fact studies show that positive thinking can have the same benefits as painkillers and can help fight disease. Best of all, positive thinking and prayer is free, easy to do and doesn’t require a prescription.

So why not give it a try? If you are wondering how to develop more positive thoughts check out the amazing book, The Power of Positive Thinking. With this book you can learn how to focus your thoughts more effectively. Basically the entire premise of the book is that every moment, day and event starts with an intention and if we are conscious of our thoughts we can learn how to best direct our energy. Aaaahhhh, we feel better already!

One in Seven Starting Puberty at AGE SEVEN!

Recently, a report hit online stating that as many as 15% of American girls are going through puberty as early as seven years of age. Now, parents are scrambling to figure out what they can do to prevent this growing trend. Studies have found a number of risks associated with early puberty including an increase risk of pregnancy, lower IQ, aggression, drug and alcohol abuse and even suicide! Although researchers don’t have a clear picture of the exact cause, there is solid evidence that points in a few directions.

Obesity
Various studies here and abroad have shown a connection between obesity and early development. One of the most cited studies was conducted by Joyce Lee of the University of Michigan who followed 354 girls from age 3 to age 12. In the study, Lee discovered a strong association between high body weight and the early onset of puberty. It seems that high levels of peripheral fat cause excess estrogen production, which in turn could lead to early puberty. However, researchers caution that more information is needed to confirm this theory.

Hormones in Food
Hormones in our food supply may also be to blame. Starting in 1995, the USDA has allowed meat suppliers to use implanted hormonal agents such as female hormones oestradiol and progesterone, the synthetic progesterone norgestomet, the male hormone testosterone and the synthetic anabolic steroids trenbolene and Zeranol. And the FDA does NOT require that meat providers list the hormones used in their operations—or share the potential negative side effects. You may be surprised to learn that there are FDA studies that confirm the harmful effects of cattle raising hormones, yet they are still legal. The best that consumers can do is to purchase meats that are hormone free. Don’t count on your local fast food joint, or even your favorite high-priced restaurant to invest in high-quality, hormone-free meat.

Soy is another problem because it contains plant-based chemicals that mimic oestrogen. A 1997 Lancet study showed the daily exposure in infants who consumed soy formulas was 6 to 11 times higher than in adults. The blood concentrations of these hormones in the children were 13,000 to 22,000 times higher than normal oestrogen levels.

Plastics and Chemicals
Despite how much easier plastics have made our lives they can contain problematic chemicals called Phthalates. Research has indicated that Phthalates are a hormone distributor that can impact young children and even those in the womb! Thankfully, there is a crop of Phthalate free products popping up to choose from!

Only 13 Percent of Kids Get Enough Veggies!

Boil, steam, sauté and salad. That’s pretty much summarizes how most of us prepare and consume our veggies. So it’s really no wonder that often times veggies are thought of as a little bit of a bore. Probably that’s why lots of us don’t get nearly enough. Surveys from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that only 27 percent of adults eat the recommended three servings of veggies per day. Oh and it’s even worse for high school students — only 13 percent of our youth are reaching the goal for vegetable consumption each day.

But, thankfully with the rise of the raw food movement, more people are saying “hello” to beautiful broccoli and savory squash by simply learning how to make vegetables more interesting and appealing. Not only that, but eating raw foods preserves valuable nutrients that are missing from most Western diets. So how does one learn more about raw food preparation? Check out the number of wonderful raw food cookbooks available today that boast a bevy of beautiful flavors.

One of our favorite raw food cookbooks is Living Raw Food by Sarma Melngailis. Vitamin D3 Key to Fighting Cancer?

A landmark study conducted by Creighton University School of Medicine found that one singular vitamin may be a key to preventing cancer. The four-year study, conducted between 2000 and 2005, followed 1,179 healthy postmenopausal women from rural eastern Nebraska.

The study found that participants who took calcium and a large dose of vitamin D3—nearly three times the US government’s Recommended Daily Amount (RDA)—showed an amazing 60 percent (yes 60%!) reduction in cancer risk compared to women who did not take the vitamin.

“The findings are very exciting. They confirm what a number of vitamin D proponents have suspected for some time but that, until now, have not been substantiated through clinical trial,” said principal investigator Joan Lappe, Ph.D., R.N., Creighton professor of medicine. “Vitamin D is a critical tool in fighting cancer as well as many other diseases.”

Additional research is needed to further substantiate the findings and determine if the positive results apply to other demographics.

You can read more about the study here.

French Fries Can Cause ADHD

Recently a landmark study was released that links pesticides to ADHD in children. In the study, performed by the Journal of Pediatrics, more than 1,000 kids were tested and of those 119 had ADHD. The children that had ADHD were found to have high levels of pesticides in their systems, particularly organophosphates, which were first developed for chemical warfare.

So what does this mean? Obviously, we need to be more mindful of pesticides and how these common chemicals affect our health. But, more so than that, we need to look at our exposure to ALL toxins and how this exposure might be affecting us and our children. In the case of ADHD, there are many potential factors that may be causing the symptoms related to this condition.

Specifically, many of us eat highly dangerous toxins every single day and don’t even know it. These toxins are additives and preservatives called excitotoxins, which can cause a host of problems including  headaches, nerve problems, anxiety,  hyperactivity, depression, mental illness, seizures and brain damage. Check out this amazing book, Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills, to find out the truth about the dangers of common preservatives and food additives. What you’ll find is that there is concrete scientific evidence against common substances like MSG found in a variety of foods (not just Chinese Food!!). These harmful substances are put into food to make it taste better and represent a billion dollar business. The problem is that they are also making us sick.

The good news is that we can do something about this by choosing foods that are free of these common chemicals. Check the labels of foods and stay away from packaged foods that contain an abundance of chemicals. Also, be careful because seemingly harmless ingredients such as “enzymes,” “hydrolyzed vegetable protein,” “natural flavors” and “spices” are really MSG in disguise! Two of the biggest culprits that you would never suspect are diet foods and Campbell Soups which are loaded with excitotoxins. Also, just because foods are labeled as “natural” or “organic” does not mean that they are safe! Get informed and take control of your health and the health of your family! Try making wholesome meals at home completely from scratch for a month and see how you feel. Our guess is much, much better.
