The Important Healing Benefits of Bitters

By: Colleen LeeAnn Meheen

Healing Bitters Drink RecipeThe old saying “you have to take the bitter with the sweet,” may have deeper meaning than first thought. For thousands of years the healing group of bitter herbs has helped promote keep bodily functions and can now help balance the ill effects of American diets that are often too focused on sweets. Bitter herbal remedies can vary, but commonly utilize naturally cleansing herbs traditional to liver and blood cleansing. Some examples are Dandelion, Blessed Thistle, Artichoke, Orange Peel, Yarrow, Gentian, Fennel, Ginger, Chamomile and Wormwood.

You can utilize any or all of these herbs in a variety of ways. From teas, tinctures, capsules, elixirs or tablets, you can enjoy the benefits that bitters offer in whatever way you find to be most convenient and effective.

These bitter formulas that are often used in the dietary supplements you see on your health food grocery store shelves, have been recipes passed down throughout the ages. The 19th century apothecaries utilized the powerful intestinal comforting benefits of these bitters in cocktails and mixed drinks. Throughout the ages, these bitters found their way into many drink concoctions and medicinal configurations to help prepare the palette and digestive system for optimal digestion.

Many bitter herbs provide ample anti-inflammatory properties, to help relieve bloating and swelling within the body. Not only this, but orange peel and dandelion also assist the body in lowering blood pressure and helps balance cholesterol, boosting your healthy cholesterol levels. Dandelion also assists in balancing the bodies’ chemistry to help reduce or even eliminate the factors that cause acne, and can help reduce the symptoms of PMS. One bitter herb particularly, called Fennel, provides ample benefits in digestion, along with its natural ability to help reduce anxiety, respiratory issues and depression.

Bitter herb solutions are ideal for those that want to digest their foods optimally or have issues digesting and assimilating food well. Organic solutions are widely available, and can be enjoyed before large meals to support an easy digestive follow up. Two products worth checking out include NatureWorks Swedish Bitters and Herbal Bitters from Urban Moonshine.

Ten Free Things You Can Do to Improve Your Health, Today

By: Dayna Copeland Schaef

Sometimes it may seem overwhelming and expensive to promote good health. Read our suggestions for the best things you can do to improve your health without spending a cent.

1. Drink Plenty of Water – Dehydration can cause a myriad of health issues, including: heartburn, ulcers, colitis, arthritis, allergies and even diabetes. Visit the water cooler once an hour to keep your body optimally hydrated and prevent headaches and energy deficits.

2. Soak up the Sun – Moderate sun exposure sans sunscreen can actually benefit your health. Catching a few rays every day can boost your vitamin D production, an essential nutrient for strong bones. Sunshine can also improve your mood and overall mental health.

3. Turn off the TV – A recent study suggests that watching large amounts of television has a direct connection to developing certain diseases like type 2 Diabetes, Heart disease and eventual early death. Turning off the television will prompt you to become more physically active, more productive and more interactive with your family and friends, all of which lead to better health.

4. Meditate – It is not necessary to take a meditation class, or to follow any certain format when meditating, just the act of sitting quietly, breathing deeply and looking inward for solitude can have incredible health benefits, including: reduced anxiety, increased energy, weight loss, increased mental sharpness and physical strength and much more.

5. Laugh – Whether you’re laughing at a funny joke, a funny face or, let’s be honest, a funny noise (and who can resist that,) getting a good chuckle can do wonders for a healthy body. Laughter relaxes your muscles, releasing endorphins, which are the “feel good” hormones that can even temporarily relieve pain.

6. Talk it Out – Internalizing issues can really eat away at your overall health, causing stress, unwanted weight gain/loss, insomnia, ulcers and increased blood pressure. Constant communication in your personal and professional relationships can really help you sleep at night.

7. Sleep In – Speaking of sleeping, getting a few extra minutes of rest can lead to a much better day, increasing your mental sharpness, memory and reaction/reflex time, and who doesn’t love to press snooze a few times.

8. Stretch – As soon as you get out of bed in the morning, and again, before you get back in it each night, a little light stretching can reduce aches and pains, prevent headaches and improve your overall mood.

9. Linger in a Hug – Intimate touch releases the “love hormone” oxytocin which increases a person’s mood, promotes healthy heart and blood circulation and reduces feelings of fear and anxiety.

10. Go For a Hike – Or a walk, or a bike ride, a swim, a jog or just jump around with your dog. Raising your heart rate for thirty minutes a day can help you maintain a healthy weight, improve your circulation, increase your endorphins and improve your heart’s health.

Reduce Cancer Risk by up to 79 Percent by Changing One Simple Thing

When it comes to health strategies, often times we forget about the simple things that we can do to help improve our well-being. Thankfully, many of these options are easy and can be accomplished at little-to-no cost.  In fact, one of the simplest cancer prevention strategies is one that nearly everyone can do daily without much effort.

Obviously water is vital to our overall health, but how many times have you went almost an entire day without so much as a sip of liquids and then drink excessively after feeling a strong sense of thirst? If so, you could be chronically dehydrated and putting your health at risk. Not many people realize it, but drinking enough fluids each day is one of the most important things we can do to look and feel our best. In fact, proper water and fluid consumption can help ease back and joint pain, boost metabolism and even reduce cancer risk by up to 79%!

Here are some interesting facts about how water and fluid intake influences our health:

•    75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (This likely applies to half the world population)
•    Even MILD dehydration will slow down ones metabolism as much as 3%.
•    One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
•    Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
•    Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day (half of that coming from food and drinks other than plain water) could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
•    A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
•    Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by up to 45%, the risk of breast cancer by up to 79%, and the risk of bladder cancer by up to 50%!

When you first start drinking the fluids that your body needs, you might experience increased urination as your body is used to utilizing whatever little moisture it receives to flush out toxins. However, keep drinking the 8 to 10 glasses of fluids you should be each day and before long you will notice a striking change in the way you look and feel. You might notice your skin looking brighter and clearer and start to feel better and more focused. If healthy skin is your focus, check out these other natural acne treatments.

As you continue to drink the appropriate amount of fluids, your body will start to trust that more is coming so it will get rid of any water retention weight in your body. This will encourage weight to drop from problem areas such as the hips, ankles, stomach and thighs.

Food allergies a result of pesticides?

By Cristen Casados

Food allergies have been on the rise in America, affecting about 15 million people, and a common chemical used to chlorinate tap water and treat pests on produce could be to blame.  New studies of existing government data by researchers at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology indicate that there may be a link between the pesticides commonly found being used in tap water and produce with food allergies.

Researchers studied the amounts of dichlorophenols in human urine to see if there was a possible connection to food allergies.  Dichlorophenols are a kind of poorly biodegradable chlorine found in certain pesticides that are used to kill bacteria and bugs in tap water and produce.  Studies are finding that these dichlorophenols could possibly be killing the naturally occurring bacteria in the human digestive system, leaving no defense against food allergies, that we would otherwise have.

Throughout life, our bodies build up a natural tolerance to substances such as polen, molds, animal danders and foods like milk, soy, wheat, eggs and nuts.  This tolerance, known as allergic antibodies, can become weakened when chemicals like dichlorophenols are introduced to the body, thus creating an allergy or more commonly, intolerance to common foods and substances.

Researchers have known for years that pesticides and insecticides are toxic to humans when exposed to them on large levels.  It’s only recently that they’ve discovered the low-level exposure effects on humans.

If you would like to begin taking precautionary measures to remove harmful pesticides and chemicals from your diet, you can begin by filtering your tap water. Please note that drinking bottled water does not necessarily protect you.  Also, you probably already know that harmful pesticides can be found in our fruits and vegetables, but did you know that are also found in fruit juices and even products containing cocoa powder?

Before you begin removing produce, fruit juice and chocolate from your diet, do a little research by reading labels.  Try to focus on eating only 100% organic produce, juices and other foods.

Organic foods are foods that are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms or ionizing radiation.  Organic meat producing animals, like poultry and cows are not treated with growth hormones or antibiotics.

If you are suffering from common food allergies, we encourage you to do a little study of your own.  Try removing products that could possibly contain pesticides by switching to 100% organic produce and start filtering your drinking water.  Make note of any changes in your food allergies.  Let us know what you find by leaving us a comment on our Facebook.

The 221 B.C. Drink for Modern Times

So, lately we’ve been seriously addicted to drinking Kombucha because it makes us feel really, really good! The other day a person even remarked that the whole office had glowing skin (not in a freaky radioactive way, but in a healthy, vibrant way). Plus, when we drink Kombucha we feel more energized to complete our work during the day.

Turns out that there’s good reason for our newfound “glow.” Kombucha contains beneficial probiotics that help the digestive and immune systems (take that flu!), contains live active enzymes that help recharge the body’s cells, and contains polyphenols that help fight free radicals. So where do you get this magical drink? Our favorite is GT’s Kombucha that can be purchased at health food stores around town including Whole Foods.

Here are some more interesting facts about Kombucha from one of the first and best to hit the market GT’s Kombucha.

o    Kombucha has been a health-promoting and life-enhancing wonder food since as early as the Tsin Chinese Dynasty of 221 BC. Its popularity has been documented throughout history in all corners of the world, from Russia to India, Germany to Japan.

o    In his autobiography, Nobel Prize winner Alexandr Solzhenitsyn wrote that drinking Kombucha helped him survive the Siberian slave camps of the former Soviet Union.

o    Kombucha may be known by many different names in other parts of the world, including Manchurian Tea, Manchu Fungus, Tea Kvass, Mo-Gu Fungus japonicus, Kwassan, and many others.

o    A report on NBC’s Dateline stated that over three million people regularly drink Kombucha.

Now that’s something to toast to! Cheers!…Now drink up!

How to Get Rid of Parasites

While we tend to accept that our pets can contract parasites that disrupt their overall health, the notion that humans can also get parasites tends to be a foreign one. The truth is that most of us will have unfriendly parasites in our bodies at one point in our lives.  Also, the truth is that anyone can get parasites—even those that don’t travel far from home. For some time many believed that people only got parasites if they traveled to exotic countries, but that just isn’t true.

Types of parasites include roundworms, protozoa (one-cell parasites), flukes and tapeworms. Before you start to imagine huge worms crawling around your body, keep in mind it is estimated that 70 percent of all human parasites are microscopic—which means that they can’t be seen with the naked eye. Despite the type of parasite, the good news is that there are lots of things that we can do to get rid of them and we don’t have to feel “creeped-out” by their existence.

So how do you know if you have parasites and if they are affecting your overall health?  While the symptoms vary widely, some more common signs include nervousness, stomach bloating, fatigue, fuzzy thinking, itchy anus, sinus trouble and feeling hungry, tired and malnourished—even after eating a large meal. And while you should always consult your health care provider if you believe you might have parasites and need advice on a course of treatment, below are some more common tools people have used to rid their bodies of unfriendly critters.

Garlic—Perhaps the easiest thing to do to help get rid of parasites is to add more garlic to your diet. Garlic contains Allicin and Ajoene—two components that work to kill parasites.

Wormwood –One of the most well-known herbs for parasites, Wormwood contains the components thujone and isothujone, which help to dispel parasites from the body. Looking for a parasite cleansing kit that features Wormwood? Check out Hanna Kroeger’s Wormwood Kit, which features Wormwood and other products that work in synergy to help rid the body of parasites.

Colon Cleanse—Diets heavy in processed and fast foods can clog up the body. And just like garbage attracts unwanted bugs when left outdoors for longer periods of times, so can waste that sits in a backed-up colon (You get the picture). Thus, a gentle colon cleanse can help dispel waste and parasites from the system.  Some of the most well-known products for colon cleansing include Sonne’s Organic Food— a highly regarded line of products which has been around since 1946. Whatever path you choose to rid your body of parasites, remember to talk to your health care provider before starting any supplement or cleansing program.

Deadly Staph Infection Cured by Pesky Tree

Lots of people know the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria as the “scary staph” that is resistant to most forms of medications—and the bad news is that this dangerous bacteria infection is on the rise. According to the Center of Disease Control, thirty years ago only 2 percent of all staph infections in the US were MRSA, but by 2003 that number climbed to a whopping 64 percent. By 2005, 94,000 people developed life-threatening MRSA with nearly 19,000 dying from it.

However, a simple tree could be the key to fighting MRSA and stopping its threat in its tracks. Researchers have discovered a staph-fighting chemical compound in the needles of Red Cedar trees. Initial tests have shown promise that this chemical compound can thwart the deadly MRSA bacterium.

What makes this more intriguing is that the Red Cedar tree has often been considered a “trash tree” and has been thought of as a nuisance because of the way it invades fertile farmlands. Also, the Red Cedar is available in large numbers year around so there is plenty of supply—an estimated 500 million grow in Missouri alone.

“I wanted to find a use for a tree species that is considered a nuisance,” said Chung-Ho Lin, research assistant professor in the MU Center for Agroforestry at the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. “This discovery could help people fight the bacteria as well as give farmers another cash crop.”

The top five foods to boost brainpower

Nothing is more frustrating than feeling foggy at the morning office meeting, coming up short in conversation with your boss, forgetting where you parked your car in the parking lot. There are so many reasons that you might experience a deterioration in brain function- lack of sleep, poor diet, stress. But instead of guzzling more coffee and turning to the sugar laden processed foods in the vending machines to get a leg up, try eating more of these top brain-boosting foods and reap the neurological rewards.

Blueberries: Nutritionists have been toting the brain-boosting benefits of blueberries for years. Full of antioxidants, blueberries protect your brain while increasing blood flow, thus improving mental sharpness.

Eggs: Eggs are high in Choline which has been shown to improve memory and brain development, plus they are a great source of lean protein.

Legumes: Feeling foggy? Eating a bowl of beans might be better for improving your alertness than that jolt of caffeine. Legumes have a nearly perfect balance of sugar to fiber ratio, giving your body the constant, time released source of energy that you need to get you through the day.

Spinach: Eating fresh spinach is a great source of iron, the nutrient that is important for consistent healthy blood flow, which will help you concentrate and think clearly.

Fish: Fish, like Salmon and Tuna are high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids and DHA, the protein that enables your brain to transmit signals to the rest of your body. Eating a serving of lean fish every day can do wonders for your overall health, and can keep your mental acuity strong into your golden years.

Nana's famous healthy spaghetti sauce

You are in for a treat! After much deliberation (and Nana’s approval!) we are sharing a secret family recipe you are sure to love! One of our team members grew up with this recipe and we can confirm that it is absolutely delicious.  Also, by using brown rice pasta instead of wheat pasta you can avoid that bloated feeling that can come with eating a big plate of spaghetti. Our favorite is Tinkyada which is wheat and gluten free.

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 2 hours

Ingredients

One tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
4 large links natural hot Italian sausage
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 pound natural ground beef
1 free range egg
1 cup crushed buttery crackers
1 large onion, diced
3 tablespoons parsley
1 (6-ounce) cans organic tomato paste
4 (8-ounce) cans organic tomato sauce
3 tablespoon Simply Organic Italian seasoning
1 bay leaf
2 tablespoon natural Agave
1 tablespoon dried oregano
2 whole dried red chillies
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
1 package brown rice pasta
2 pads of butter
Grated Asiago cheese to taste

Directions

First prep and cook the meat:

Cut the sausage links into threes and brown them over medium-low heat in a large, deep pan with the olive oil and garlic (the one you are going to cook the spaghetti sauce in). While the sausage is cooking in a closed pan, prep the meatballs while making sure to stir the sausage every once and awhile to prevent burning. Whisk the egg and then combine 2 tablespoons of parsley, the ground meat, half of the diced onion and cracker crumbs to form meatballs. Brown the meatballs over medium heat in a covered large saucepan, turning to brown evenly on all sides.

Now the sauce:

Put the remaining onions in the sausage pan to brown lightly, add the meatballs and then add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, 1 tablespoon parsley, Italian seasoning, oregano, agave, red dried chillies, bayleaf, salt and water. Bring sauce to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently, and then cook for around two hours on low heat. Make sure to continue to stir so that the sauce does not burn. Serve with brown rice pasta seasoned with a touch of butter and top with grated Asiago cheese.

Natural Flu Fighters

With more people becoming increasingly concerned about the Flu, many are looking for ways to protect their health. Below are some helpful, general (and easy!) tips to overcoming the flu and other viruses.

Plain ol’ Vitamin C – Even though most people know the benefits of Vitamin C, many don’t take it to boost their immune systems when they are concerned about illness—they take it AFTER they get sick. To choose the right Vitamin C for you, talk to your health care provider about which dosage you should take. Drinks like “C Monster” make it easy to get some Vitamin C and stay hydrated at the same time. Which brings us to the next point…

Stay Hydrated and Eat Whole Foods – Again, this seems like common sense, but often the most logical and clear cut health strategies are the ones that are most missed. To help keep your body healthy make sure to drink lots of fluids throughout the day (remember that soda and coffee do not count!) and eat whole foods – including choices that boost health and immunity.  Look for organic choices like garlic (natural immune boost) squash (helps clear toxics), asparagus (cleans the blood) and Elderberries (antiviral properties and flu-fighting flavonoids).
